Job Title: CHIEF MECHANIC
The Chief Mechanic is responsible for the overall status of the repair and maintenance of all vehicles and equipment. This employee directs job assignments and supervises the efforts of other mechanics in the Fleet Service Garage.
Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:
• Advises and assists with the inspection and carrying out of both major, minor and technical repairs with light vehicles
• Arranges and schedules preventative maintenance of the fleet.
• Supervises and delegates tasks to junior mechanics.
• Training and knowledge transfer to junior mechanics in the repair and maintenance of the fleet.
• Prepares monthly and other status reports, performs maintenance and repairs to the fleet to ensure that it's available, reliable and safe to operate.
• Assigns daily workloads to the Transport and Maintenance Mechanics.
• Inspects various mechanical, electrical, hydraulic and electronic problems that may be experienced.
• Ensures that various parts are ordered when needed.
• Liaises with the stores personnel to maintain and inventory of critical parts that may be needed for daily operations.
• Ensures that all required maintenance schedules are implemented and adhered to.
• Maintains a record of repair and service of fleet.
• Advises the Operations Manager as to the overall condition of the fleet and assists in scheduling the replacement of aging vehicles that become cost inefficient or unsafe.
• Assists the Manager Operations in the evaluation of new and replacement vehicles and equipment.
• Assures that all maintenance and repairs performed are accomplished in a safe manner and follow OSHA guidelines.
• Assures that all equipment used for servicing and repairs conform to OSHA standards.
• Assists in developing the annual department plan through collaboration with the Manager Operations and General Manager Operations.
• Assists in the continuous review of processes and health and safety procedures in the department.
• Ensures adherence to operational strategies, procedures and processes outlined by the Operations Division for the department and initiates disciplinary action if and when necessary.
• Recommends and assists in the implementation of goals and objectives; identifies maintenance problems and areas; establishes schedules and methods for providing fleet maintenance and repair services, implements policies and procedures.
• Plans and lays out fleet maintenance work projects; prepares time, material and equipment estimates for assigned jobs; requisitions materials required; orders parts as necessary and ensures parts ordered are received in a timely fashion.
• Responsible for the effective manpower management for effective and efficient scheduling of staff to achieve service objectives.
• Supervises work in progress and completed work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods and techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications.
• Accounts for the accurate preparation and timely submission of Time Sheets for payment of fortnightly staff.
• Prepares necessary reports; i.e. prepare project status reports; maintain records of projects, activities and materials used; supervises the maintenance of time, material and equipment use records.
• Attends monthly divisional meetings and submits report to the Operations Manager and the General Manager of Operations.
• Requests and distributes PPE to department staff.
• Supervises direct reports and manage general HR issues.
• Reports Punctuality and Absenteeism data daily.
• Implements the Performance Appraisal system as in accordance with the Company policy.
• All other related duties as assigned by General Manager Operations/Operations Manager
Qualification and/or Experience Critical:
• 5-8 years relevant experience in a similar position
• Experience leading a team
• Good interpersonal skills
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Willing to work outside of normal working hours
• Team oriented
• Ability to relate to all levels of staff
