POSITION DESCRIPTION Position Title: Medical Technologist Reports To: Manager, Blood Center and Medical Officers Purpose Statement Performs required laboratory procedures to ensure the safety and quality of blood for transfusion.
Key Result Area: Duties and Responsibilities: Performs various laboratory examinations on collected blood as mandated by the Department of Health on all blood units for transfusion such as: ABO blood grouping Rh blood grouping Malaria antibody screening Syphilis antibody screening HBsAg detection (manual and EIA) HIV 1 and 2 antibody and antigen screening (manual and EIA) HCV antibody screening (manual and EIA) Prepares blood component. Carry out proper storage and issuance of blood and blood components. Performs serological tests for out-patients and PRC staff referred by the NBC Clinical laboratory. Performs the function of phlebotomist or receptionist whenever necessary. Performs special functions such as: Evaluates reagents for use in serological testing; Prepares CuSO4 solution; Evaluates and sends requests for confirmatory tests at the NRL. Sends NBC blood samples at the NRL for confirmatory testing. Keeps accurate records and provides reports on laboratory activities such as: Laboratory examinations which include the total number of tests performed at the NBC, number of reactive and nonreactive Preparation of components Wastage Incoming and outgoing blood units Quality control reports on testing and processing Blood shipment and hubbing system Blood sample referrals to the National Reference Laboratory Temperature logs of blood cold chain equipment at the NBC Maintenance and repair records for NBC equipment for both testing and storage. Reagent inventory and utilization report. Helps in the maintenance of sanitation and upkeep of the NBC equipment and facilities, proper disinfection and disposal of laboratory wastes. Supervises and trains medical technologist interns, trainees and volunteers in the laboratory. In line with quality assurance, measures and monitors performance of equipment and reagents. Ensures that the laboratory licenses are up to date. Performs other duties as may be assigned by Superiors. Qualifications/Minimum Education: Medical Technologist license holder Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology Personal Attributes: Work Experience and Skills Ability to make decisions in-line with organizational goals and values. Minimum one year work related experience. Ability to manage multiple tasks. Collaborates with team members to achieve shared outcomes.
