Department: Petrology Group: SUB SURFACE- GEOTHERMAL RESOURCE Section: Location: Head Office 2. JOB SUMMARY The Petrologist implements, conducts, interprets and evaluates petrologic studies relevant to the exploration, development and utilization of the country's energy resources using petrographic, XRD, fluid inclusion microthermometry, and SEM-EDX techniques to ensure accurate evaluation and efficient utilization of these resources. The Petrologist also assists the Petrology Laboratory Services (PLS) Head in ensuring plans and programs aimed at process improvement, regulatory compliance, database management, quality control, costs management and revenue generation, efficient logistics and facilities management are implemented. 3. SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES PERFORMANCE INDICATOR PLANNING Collaborates with EDC Sub-Surface Geothermal Resource Group by providing petrologic data and interpretation to be utilized in the design of plans and programs involving drilling, maintenance and enhancement of producing wells in operating fields as well as in the assessment of exploration/expansion areas and projects for acquisition. This includes in scope the following activities: a. Drafting of well designs through seamless integration of petrologic data with geologic data to come out with a comprehensive geological prognosis
b. Planning for prioritization of wells for acidizing
c. Planning for scaling inhibition operations
d. Planning for pipeline corrosion tests
e. Creation of a sampling plan for drilling and exploration to ensure quality of sample for analysis
f. Other technical evaluation requiring petrological analyses or results
Collaborates with EDC Sub-Surface Geothermal Resource Group and external consultants/vendors in process improvement initiatives, including database management, using advancements in information technology (IT) Prepares and endorses to superior plans for the efficient execution of day-to-day operations of the laboratory which includes the following areas: Planning for process improvements to conform with ISO quality standards aimed at improving cost and operating efficiency, safety, health and environmental impact
Planning and budgeting for capital and operating expenditures, manpower and other resource requirements to support sample preparation, analysis, storage, documentation of results and other process improvement initiatives
Collaborates with EDC's Sub-Surface Geothermal Resource Group's Knowledge and Quality Management and HR Management (HRM) in planning for manpower training requirements as part of continuous learning and skills improvement programs Collaborates with EDC's Health, Environment and Safety Group (HESG) in planning activities and training geared towards improving HES practices, and proper compliance to regulatory policies and requirements IMPLEMENTATION: Monitors handling of samples from the time the request is uploaded in the OTRS and assigned to Petrologist for analysis. This includes taking note of date/time of arrival of samples in the Petrology Laboratory, to making sure sample is processed or lined-up for processing and updating of the OTRS when the final petrologic report is released to close/resolve the request. Monitors timeline for sample analysis results, release of reports and communicate with client to agree on deadlines. Performs systematic analysis of cuttings/cores from wells, surface samples from exploration and operation areas, ejecta/scale deposits and metal coupons from wells, Fluid Collection, Disposal and Reinjection System (FCDRS) and Power Plants (PP) with the aid of reflecting/polarizing microscopes, X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), Fluid Inclusion (FI) system and Scanning Electron Microscope-Energy Dispersive X-Ray Analyzer (SEM-EDX). Evaluates and interprets results of petrologic analysis in terms of reservoir temperature, fluid chemistry, water-rock interaction, permeability, stratigraphy and thermal history of the system for wells. Additionally, Petrologist will also interpret analysis results of scales, ejecta and metal coupons in terms of composition (elemental, if needed), depositional history, and possible depth of origin (for ejecta).  Prepares interim and final petrologic reports on analysis results, interpretation and evaluation of petrologic and other related data to arrive at a physico-chemical model of a geothermal well, composition of scales/ejecta and viability of a geothermal exploration area, in collaboration with other geoscientists and reservoir engineers. Coordinates with EDC Sub-Surface Geothermal Resource Group/Resource Management Division geochemists in conducting inspection and failure analysis of field facilities during annual preventive maintenance service (PMS) and in collecting scale samples from pipelines and power plants as needed. Monitors on-going drilling operations and provides management and other departments with relevant petrologic information needed for critical decisions such as setting of production casing shoe, understanding and solving drilling problems, and termination of drilling operations. Evaluates and assesses geothermal areas and develops integrated hydrogeological models of geothermal fields together with other geoscientists, reservoir engineers and drilling engineers. Coordinates with geologists regarding structural flow paths in geothermal fields to identify faults which should be targeted by well drilling and which structures should be avoided Conducts research studies designed to solve fields operational problems such as mineral scaling and corrosion of pipelines and concrete structures  Practices effective management of operational costs and contribute to revenue through analysis of external samples as allowed by workload Assists in the preparation/completion of relevant documents and requirements concerning government regulatory permits (e.g. DOLE). DATA MANAGEMENT: Populates and maintains the Petrology database to ensure data availability for well design and prognosis, resource assessment, and other process initiatives and requirements in collaboration with geoscientists and reservoir engineers. Inputs analytical results for well, surface and scale samples in the Petrology Database. Maintains a database of samples, including the indexing/ cataloguing/ storage of all rock and scale samples adherent to relevant ISO quality standards COMMUNICATION MANAGEMENT: Convenes/participates in routine and technical meetings, as required, to implement and monitor progress of programs, discuss current technical issues and concerns, and keep abreast of latest developments relative to the operations of Field Services Provides concerned personnel with timely and relevant updates on the status of field services activities QUALITY MANAGEMENT: Ensures proper handling, storage, and maintenance of all laboratory equipment, and all rock and scale samples submitted to the Petrology Laboratory Services Reviews and improves petrologic techniques to ensure high quality data and increase the efficiency of the Petrology Laboratory Services Maintains files and records as prescribed by relevant ISO quality standards MANPOWER DEVELOPMENT: Attends seminars/conferences and other training programs approved by Sub-Surface Geothermal Resource Group's Knowledge and Quality Management and HRM Develops and assists in in-house training for EDC employees on petrological/ analytical principles and techniques, basic instrumentation, good laboratory practices, quality control procedures, laboratory safety, environmental awareness, etc LOGISTICS and FACILITIES MANAGEMENT: Ensures proper handling, storage, and up-to-date maintenance of all laboratory equipment adherent to ISO Standards Ensures that activities in the Petrology Laboratory Services adhere to EDC's commitment to a safe and healthy working environment. Facilitates preparation and approval of Permit to Work (PTW) requirements to be issued to external parties/contractors during equipment and facilities installation and maintenance, and other activities that would require such documents. Facilitates reporting of First and succeeding alerts on incidences of accidents, breakdown of equipment / facilities and other incidents that compromise safety and security so that Management is informed accordingly.
