The Medical Technologist in a pre-employment diagnostic healthcare facility within the Maritime Industry is responsible for performing laboratory tests and analyses on specimens collected from individuals undergoing pre-employment screenings. This role involves conducting a variety of laboratory procedures to assess applicants' health status and ensure they meet the medical requirements for maritime employment.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: Receive and process specimens, including blood, urine, and other bodily fluids, collected from individuals undergoing pre-employment screenings. Ensure proper labeling, handling, and storage of specimens to maintain sample integrity.Perform a variety of laboratory tests and analyses on specimens using automated and manual techniques. Conduct tests such as blood chemistry panels, complete blood counts (CBC), urinalysis, and drug screenings to assess applicants' health status and detect any abnormalities or medical conditions.Conduct quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results. Monitor equipment performance, calibrate instruments, and troubleshoot technical issues to maintain high-quality laboratory standards.Analyze test results and interpret findings in accordance with established laboratory protocols and reference ranges. Document test results accurately and promptly in laboratory information systems or paper-based records.Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and equipment to ensure proper functioning and optimal performance. Follow manufacturer guidelines and safety protocols for instrument maintenance and operation.Adhere to regulatory requirements, safety protocols, and quality assurance standards governing laboratory operations. Maintain compliance with accreditation standards and participate in proficiency testing programs as required.Collaborate with healthcare providers, laboratory staff, and other members of the healthcare team to ensure seamless coordination of pre-employment screenings and timely reporting of test results. Communicate effectively to address any issues or concerns related to laboratory testing.Stay informed about advancements in laboratory technology, testing methodologies, and industry trends. Participate in continuing education activities to enhance knowledge and skills in medical laboratory science.QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in medical technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or a related field.Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is preferred.Experience working in a clinical laboratory setting, preferably in a pre-employment or occupational health context.Proficiency in performing a variety of laboratory tests and analyses.Strong attention to detail and accuracy in specimen processing and test performance.Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks.Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality and data integrity.
