Position Summary The Director of the Coding University is responsible for the oversight, management and success of the Coding University program. Ensures that Educators and students adhere to the approved curricula and abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by AHIMA. The Director monitors and contributes to the adherence of department budget and financial guidelines.
Responsibilities and Duties Oversight for the GBC Coding University program to include the curricula, policies and procedures, effectiveness of the Educators, and success of the students.Ensure Policies and Procedures are effectively developed, communicated and carried out and updated as needed.Continually assess and improve Educator and student performance through daily interactions, analysis and performance improvement initiatives.Support a robust audit process for students, new graduates, and coders on a Performance Improvement Plan using agreed scoring & evaluation methods.Collaborate with Tenet and Conifer Operational leaders to resolve training and auditing opportunities, including follow up and monitoring.Other duties as assignedFunctional Area Outcomes and Expectations Responsible for management of Coding Educators and students, and to take action as needed to ensure our program's success.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Proficient in training delivery to adult learners, taking into account cultural specificity of training class.Strong leadership and communication skills, problem solving abilities; good knowledge of coding and reimbursement medical records systemsAbility to build and maintain team's dynamics cohesion, performance and talent retentionAdvanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, and CPT and HCPCS code sets, MS-DRG & APR-DRG classification and reimbursement structures, coding principles and rulesKnowledge of APC, OCE, NCCI, MUE classification and revenue cycle structures reimbursement structures of hospitals, physician offices, medical clinics, and third-party payorsAdvanced knowledge of the functions of hospitals, physician offices, medical clinics, and third-party medical companiesKeeps abreast of new technology in coding and abstracting software and other forms of automation and stays informed about transaction code sets, HIPAA requirements and other future issues impacting the coding functionModerate to advanced skills in MS Excel and PowerPointAbility to work under deadlines and juggle multiple projectsAbility to work independently and as part of a teamAbility to multitask with flexibility of daily prioritiesRequired and Preferred Qualifications Five (5) years of relevant combined experience in coding education and/or training in facility-based and provider-based settings, required.Five (5) years of recent leadership experience related to coding training or auditing functions.Advanced knowledge of ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS classification systems, and CDI functions.Required Education and Certification Degree: Health Information Management, Clinical Degree (MD, RN) and/or Allied HealthAHIMA or AAPC Certification such as CCS, CIC, CPCAHIMA ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer preferredPhysical Requirements: Must be able to work in sitting position, use computer and answer telephone.
