The job of food chemist involves studying the components that make up our food at the molecular level and using that knowledge to improve the preparation, processing, storage and distribution of processed food.

Food Chemist Job Description

Food chemists use their scientific knowledge to breakdown the content of food to determine its chemical makeup.
They work in laboratories, offices and in the field on farms and in food processing plants, coming up with new food sources, as well as ways to preserve natural foods while keeping them healthy, flavorful and safe to eat.
They use chemicals to create flavor blends for food and beverage products in order to enhance or mask the natural flavors.
They also employ chemistry to mimic the effects of the cooking process to improve taste.
Education Requirements

The minimum education requirements for agricultural and food scientists include a bachelor's degree in their specialty from an accredited college or university.
Coursework may include food chemistry, as well as food engineering and processing, with internships and research encouraged even at the undergraduate level.
Many food scientists hold advanced degrees.
An advanced degree in a related field, such as chemistry or biology, may qualify for some food science jobs.
